A biker, running to make a difference
Women’s motorcycle boots, jackets, chaps and gloves are just as important as putting on a helmet before riding. Motorcycle safety is not something any woman motorcyclist should take lightly. Every time you get on your motorcycle and ride you should have on the correct safety equipment. Motorcycle boots, chaps and motorcycle jackets aren’t just a fashion statement. Although, they do look so cool, they serve a function. They are designed to protect your body.
In reality it is not just your head that needs to be protected in a motorcycle crash. Out side of head injuries, your body can only sustain a certain amount of trauma before it also becomes life threatening.
According to the article; “Motorcycle Helmet Performance: Blowing the Lid Off” in Motorcyclist Online, doctors and head-injury researchers have a rating system that outlines injury severity survivability.“How Hurt Is Hurt?
Doctors and head-injury researchers use a simplified rating of injuries, called the Abbreviated Injury Scale, or AIS, to describe how severely a patient is hurt when they come into a trauma facility. AIS 1 means you’ve been barely injured. AIS 6 means you’re dead, or sure to be dead very soon. Here’s the entire AIS scale:
AIS 1 = Minor
AIS 2 = Moderate
AIS 3 = Serious
AIS 4 = Severe
AIS 5 = Critical
AIS 6 = Un-survivable
A patient’s AIS score is determined separately for each different section of the body. So you could have an AIS 4 injury to your leg, an AIS 3 to your chest and an AIS 5 injury to your head. And you’d be one hurtin’ puppy.”
Having the right Women’s motorcycle boots, the right women’s motorcycle and the right women’s chaps can make all of the difference in whether you survive if you have a bad motorcycle accident.
Motorcycle boots with steel toes that lace or zips up are the best. A leather or Kevlar mesh motorcycle jacket with extra padding at the elbow is also recommended. Women’s motorcycle chaps or leather riding pants should be considered as well.
You might think that jeans may seem all right and will protect you. Try this, take a piece of 60 grit sand paper to your favorite pair of jeans and see how long it takes to scrape a hole in them. Remember that’s only sixty grit paper and you are not going 60 miles per hour.
Another thing to think about is a full-fingered pair of gloves. Fingerless gloves may look cool and be cooler if your riding in warm weather however, even though they may have palm padding, with nothing in-between your digits and the road you could grind a finger or two down to the bone.
As the responsible motorcycle woman that you are, the one thing that you never want to do, is ride your motorcycle wearing flip-flops and shorts. I know you have probably seen a lot of people doing it. Although, it may seem ok because you’re just going down to the convenience store on the corner, it is not… Most accidents occur with in a few miles from home and it just shows your inexperience as a motorcycle rider. I will repeat my self here. Don’t wear flop-flops when you ride. I don’t even recommend wearing sneakers. A good well fitting pair of women’s motorcycle boots won’t come off or wear down if you happen to crash.
I asked this question to a group of seasoned motorcycle riders. “Should people wear shorts and flip-flops when riding their motorcycle?” Most answered the same, none would ever consider riding with out the proper gear.
Here is what one woman had to say: “As a women rider for 8 years you will not find me in a pair of flip flops or heels. It’s just asking for a broken toe or skinned foot and trying to change gears would be difficult. If you have survived an accident like myself (and have road rash) or have seen road rash first hand you would keep in mind what you’re going to wear before you get on your bike. I also agree Wayne Busch with judging a riders experience by their attire. Those who have been riding long enough know better.” Posed by Kerra Knox…
I know the reason we ride a motorcycle in the first place is for the freedom. We ride to feel the wind in our face and for the exhilaration and adrenalin rush. This is all well and good. However, we need to do it in a responsible manner. I know in hot weather big bulky leather can be cumbersome and hot. In cases where you just aren’t comfortable in leather you can opt for mesh, it is just as durable and safe to wear.
One thing to remember, hot or not its your safety that matters first. And the first thing you need to start with is a good pair of women’s motorcycle boots.
